Description:

An increasing number of studies in non-invasive brain stimulation applications for treatment of substance use disorders (SUDs) has brought hope that methods such as transcranial electrical/magnetic stimulation (TES/TMS) might be brought into addiction medicine clinics. One important challenge to making this real, however, is the heterogeneity in methods and outcome measures across TES/TMS trials in SUDs. Lack of pre-registration, inadequate sample size, multi-center vs single institute trials, and the shortage of replication studies has added to the complexity of making any generalizable conclusions about effective therapies. This is despite tremendous effort on the part of individual investigators to understand the neural basis of SUDs and develop effective therapies. Here, we plan to create a world-wide international collaborative network of TES/TMS investigators across the world with the aim of increasing the efficiency of translating our basic knowledge of the neuroscience underlying TES/TMS effects in SUDs into effective clinical practice.

We will have an early morning meeting in the NYC NANS2018 to discuss the scope and goals of ICNTAM. The meeting will be open to the public but we highly recommend that attendees RSVP by sending an email to icntam2018@gmail.com in order to receive the meeting agenda and pre-meeting materials. Questions about the ICNTAM may be posted to the same email address. There will be no breakfast provided at the meeting room but people can bring their breakfast from the designated areas to the room.

Concurrent online participation will not be an option in this meeting but the first ICNTAM webinar will occur shortly after NANS2018 on Wednesday September 26 10a-12 ET for ICNTAM members. Our short-term goal is to write a consensus paper with ICNTAM members to address knowledge gaps and to harmonize strategies to address them. We hope to actualize ICNTAM plans with support from investigators, private companies, and granting agencies across the world in coming years.
